About Breaking the Taboo
Breaking the Taboo aimed to raise awareness among the public as well as health and social service professionals of all levels concerning violence against older women in families and to contribute to breaking this taboo. The overall purpose of the project was to improve the situation of older women in families by empowering health and social service professionals to recognize abusive situations and to help combat them.
The project ran from 2007-2009 with project partners from Austria, Finland, Italy, Poland and Germany in collaboration with partners from Belgium, France and Portugal and was coordinated by the Austrian Red Cross. It was carried out within the Daphne II programme, funded by the European Commission.
The main products of the project are
- A European research report
- A brochure containing tools to recognise violence, strategies how to deal with violence and country specific information on the legal framework as well as on relevant support organisations
- Awareness raising workshops for health and social service professionals in Austria, Italy, Poland and Finland
- An experts conference in Austria, Finland, Italy and Poland
- A short summary of the experiences of the project for policy makers
